I have been reading and rereading some of Walter Mosley’s books recently. I picked up a copy of “The Right Mistake” at the library last week and was once again rewarded with rich big chunks of meat in a plain spoken philosophical stew of the authors making.
I first started reading Mosely’s work when I saw Devil in a Blue Dress starring Denzel Washington and wondered what other work the writer had written. Yeah, I admit I should have known who he was, but I wasn’t reading much for years. Since 1995 I’ve read quite a few of Mosely’s works, including my most recent “The Right Mistake!”
Soccrates Fortlow, the primary character in the Right Mistake is a ex-con on the road to redemption. And he finds it.
The thrust of the title of the book called the Right Mistake is that redemption exists if you learn from your mistakes. This is a little description of the books theme:
The Right Mistake is the third Walter Mosley book to feature Los Angeles street-philosopher Socrates Fortlow, a man keenly aware of how finely balanced are the forces of good and evil doing battle within him. He has learned to live with a constant personal struggle to ensure that the good inside him maintains its upper hand on the evil he knows to be buried not so deeply in his heart, a struggle he does not always win.
So when I heard this Robbie Robertson song on the radio I had to go and look for a youtube of his song. It is so familiar in contextual meaning to the Mosley book that I was immediately grabbed. Besides, I love the song.
So, I highly recommend any of Mosley’s work, including The Right Mistake and I include the Roberston tune for your Friday evening pleasure.
